Manny Ramirez is one interesting athlete to write about. After his Incredible Hulk train ride down Taiwan's east coast to the city of Hualien, Ramirez gave us a couple good "Manny Being Manny" moments Friday evening.
The first one came in the top of the sixth. With Manny on first base, a routine ground ball is hit directly at the first baseman, who quickly throws to second to start the double play. The throw is way off the mark and Manny goes down to slide into second...however he slides a little early. Make that way too early. Ramirez comes up a solid five feet short and is easily tagged out as he lays on the infield. As he jogs off the field he attempts to remain serious but then can't help crack a smile as he reaches the dugout. At least he's having fun.
Manny's antics on the evening didn't stop there.
Fast forward to the bottom of the eighth. A Brother Elephants' (yes, the team with the all yellow uniforms) hitter breaks his bat and the barrel ends up in the Rhinos' dugout. The Brother Elephants' bat boy then comes to retrieve the broken piece. Nothing strange about that. But then he's stopped by Ramirez. Manny calmly takes the bat from him, sits down with it, examines it...and then begins to smell it. Ramirez takes a couple good whiffs, too. It can all be seen here.
I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.
